Les Mélèzes
The town La Chaux-de-Fonds, home of the same named team which was founded in 1919, is
located in the Kanton (compareable to the states in the USA) "Neuenberg" close
to the French border.
La Chaux-de-Fonds managed to achieve something no other team has ever done again up to
now. The team became champion for 6 straight years in a row in the Swiss NLA between 1968
and 1973. Nevertheless after this glorious time the team went downhill and even played in
the NLB during the 80ies, or even in a lower division at times. Not until 1996 the team
could play again in the highest division, the NLA. With having lots of trouble and not
being able to play well enough the team had to leave this league again just after 2 years
in order to join the NLB, a lower division. Although the direct comeback didn't work out
the team qualified for the NLA again for the 2000/2001 season only to finish dead last
again and move to the NLB again.
One of the biggest rivals is the team of HC Lausanne which plays in the NLA at the moment.
Other important and intense games are the derbies against the Sprinters of Neuchatel, but
this team is playing in lower divisions by right now so that all the big rivals are either
too good or to bad to be in the same division as La Chaux-de-Fonds.
The arena "Les Mélèzes" was built in 1969 and has an official capacity of
7.000 seats. Although the arena was renovated when the team advanced to the NLA again in
1996 you can still easily see how old this arena really is.
It shouldn't be a problem to get tickets for the games, but it is still advisable to be on
time in order to get a parking spot. Otherwise you have to leave your car along the
"Quartierstraßen".
